Trip Overview

A comprehensive tour of the incredible World Heritage Sites of Nepal.

That Nepal is rich in culture and heritage is a given, but this beautiful country is also crammed with UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES. The cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley is illustrated by seven groups of monuments and buildings that display the full range of historic and artistic achievements. The seven include the Durbar Squares of Hanuman Dhoka (Kathmandu), Patan and Bhaktapur; the Buddhist stupas of Swayambunath and Bouddha; and the Hindu temples of Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan. In the rurality of the Kathmandu Valley, you'll discover the delights of Panauti and Namobuddha and some other hidden gems too.  Additionally, both Chitwan National Park and the Sagarmatha National Park (perhaps better known as the Everest region) are also world heritage sites. This itinerary incorportates visits to almost all of the world heritage sites in Nepal, as well as one or two others that, in due course, may also become listed as World Heritage sites. As we specialise in tailor made Nepal tours, this suggested itinerary can be customised.

    DAY
    3

    Budhanlikantha & Changu Narayan

Another full-day guided tour by Private vehicle In the morning, you head to the site of Budhanlikantha. It has probably the largest stone statue of Vishnu in Nepal, reclining on a bed of snakes in the middle of a pond. The location itself is one of nature and serenity in harmony. You'll then travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Changu Narayan. This is one of the best-known Vishnu temples in Nepal. The temple is one of the most elaborate in the Kathmandu Valley, rich in wood and stone carvings. It is a two-tiered pagoda structure and was reconstructed in 1702 after the old one was gutted by fire. A stone tablet in the vicinity of the temple dates from the 5th century, the oldest such inscription discovered in Nepal. The main courtyard has several temples and idols of gods with intricate carvings in stone created between the 5th to 12th centuries, making it the highest concentration of ancient art in Nepal. Late afternoon you'll arrive at the medieval city of Bhaktapur.

    Medieval Bhaktapur

The frenetic hoopla of Kathmandu is now behind you, as the old part of Bhaktapur is essentially a pedestrian area. As well as exploring the temples and squares of Bhaktapur on a morning Guided Tour (on foot), your guide will also take you on a backstreet exploration of Bhaktapur. By late afternoon, the day trippers have usually left Bhaktapur, and this is why you're staying here again tonight, as that sense of having Bhaktapur 'to yourself' and being able to wander around and observe Bhaktapur life as it really is is more than worth it.

Panauti, Namobuddha and the rural Kathmandu Valley

Another full-day guided tour by Private Vehicle is needed to explore the rural delights of the Kathmandu Valley. You'll visit the ancient Hindu temples at Panauti, as well as the spiritual Buddhist location of Namobuddha. As this is an unhurried day, there'll be plenty of time to stop and take a walk into the terraced farmlands, orchards, and timeless villages of the Kathmandu Valley and to observe rural life.

Accommodation: Namobuddha Resort - Near Dhulikel/Namobuddha
    Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Off the beaten track in the Kathmandu Valley

Today you'll visit lesser-known places as part of a full-day guided tour with a private vehicle. These are still very significant sites in the Kathmandu Valley, though. Firstly, you'll visit the Newari towns of Bugmati and Khokana, known for wood carvers and unique mustard oil processing, respectively. Indeed, Khokana is a prospective World Heritage Site in itself. Next, you'll visit the hilltop temple of Sheshnarayan, a World Heritage Site, and then nearby is Neydo Monastery, which also has a very comfy guest house (en-suite rooms) and is an ideal place to overnight. The monks at the monastery are very welcoming, and you can watch any prayers or rituals and explore the monastery.
