Trip Overview

A purposefully unhurried cultural Nepal tour for families that have younger children.

The 'wow' factor is retained on this varied and fascinating private Nepal family journey, but this is far from a 'whistle-stop tour'. We've intentionally designed this tour to afford flexibility at each particular location along the way.  A Himalayan holiday for kids and adults too. You'll have plenty of time to do more than just 'scratch the surface', while affording parents the opportunity to feel more relaxed and the kids the freedom to feel free. Along the way, you'll explore Kathmandu, make pottery in mediaeval Bhaktapur and discover rural Nepal at dreamy Nuwakot and sleepy Bandipur. It's then down to lakeside Pokhara before experiencing a majestic Himalayan panorama at Nagarkot.  A holiday that all the family can enjoy, as well as providing a valuable insight into the varied nature of Nepal. Walks can be varied to suit your family's abilities, too.

    DAY
    2

    Kathmandu Tour & Bhaktapur

In the morning, a Kathmandu City Guide and a private vehicle with a driver will take you and your family on a tour of the main sights of Kathmandu. Kids particularly enjoy a visit to the hilltop Swayambunath Stupa. It's often referred to as the Monkey Temple. Monkeys are considered sacred (by the monkey god Hanuman), and so there are quite a lot of monkeys running around the Stupa here. In the late afternoon, you'll be driven the short distance to the mediaeval city of Bhakatpur. You'll probably be glad to leave the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu, and as the 'old part' of Bhaktapur is pedestrianised, the more relaxed atmosphere of this fascinating mediaeval city is a relief.

Accommodation: Hotel Heritage Malla  - Bhaktapur
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

    DAY
    3

Pottery Making in Bhaktapur and to Nuwakot

In the morning, a Bhaktapur City Guide will take you all on a morning walking tour of 'hidden' Bhaktapur. Away from the main sites, you'll encounter traditional pottery making (for which Bhakatpur is renowned). The locals make it look easy, of course. Still, your kids (and you too, if you wish) can try their hands at pottery making too. After lunch, you'll then travel by private vehicle towards the Langtang Himal, the rural foothills of the Himalayas, and the beautiful village of Nuwakot. It's around 2–3 hours of driving on a mountain road, and when you reach the 2000-metre pass, you'll be greeted with panoramic Himalayan views. You'll be staying at the Famous Farm. A former Newari Manor House, tastefully converted to provide atmospheric accommodation. It has its own large, private hillside gardens as well as a vegetable growing area and is a firm favourite with children, particularly as there are ducks, chickens, turkeys, and goats running around the gardens. Mum and Dad may enjoy the views of the Trisuli River Valley and the very relaxed atmosphere.

    4

    Explore and relax at Nuwakot

By now, you'll have time to adjust to Nuwakot time, i.e., slow, relaxed, and peaceful. In the morning, a member of staff from the Famous Farm will act as your guide for a morning walking tour of Nuwakot village and environs. Your kids may appreciate visiting the school here (the local kids will be happy to see you all), as well as the small school for deaf and mute children (the only one of its kind in Nepal). Outside the main school is a large, flat area that the kids use to play. Your own children will be made very welcome to join in and play too if there's a kickabout going on, a spot of skipping, or whatever the local children are up to. English is taught at school in Nepal from an early age, and the local kids will be very, very pleased to try out what they have learned. Of course, interactive cultural encounters cannot be manufactured, but your guide will be very happy to help your family engage with the friendly people of Nuwakot. The afternoon is free for you to explore further or get involved with whatever might be going on that your kids might like. Enjoy another tasty Nepali dinner at the Famous Farm, and as they have an open kitchen here, by all means pop in and see how they prepare typical Nepali cuisine. Don't blame us if you find yourselves washing up!

    Travel to Bandipur

Your journey by private vehicle continues down to the Trisuli Valley and to the main highway. Following the highway for a short while, you then turn left to ascend a mountain road that climbs up around 900m into the hills on the southern side of the Trisuli River Valley. Here lies the small, peaceful, ancient town of Bandipur, which occupies an enviable 'eagle's nest' location perched high in the hills with uninterrupted views over to Manaslu and the Annapurnas. Your accommodation here is located in the heart of the town in a welcoming pedestrianised area. From the terraces of the Old Inn, there are commanding views of the Himalaya, and although Bandipur is different in certain aspects from Nuwakot, there's still a very relaxed feel about it. Journey time: approx. 3 hours.

    9

Fly to Kathmandu & to hill top Nagarkot

A private transfer to Pokhara Airport for the short flight to Kathmandu. A private transfer will take you from Kathmandu Airport up to the very top of the hills that form the rim surrounding the Kathmandu Valley. We figured that after such a relaxing journey through Nepal, you're not quite ready yet to face the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. At around 2100m, Nagarkot is renowned for being the best Himalayan view point close to Kathmandu, but here the air is fresh, and although Nagarkot is very much a 'resort' for the Kathmandu elite, it only takes a short walk to discover that in spite of the proximity to Kathmandu, traditional villages still exist. So, in the afternoon a guide will take you for a walk along the ridge tops to encounter traditional Kathmandu Valley life.

Himalayan Sunrise & return to Kathmandu

Of course, as well as delaying your return to Kathmandu, the other reason we've brought you here is to enjoy a panoramic Himalayan sunrise. In the clear mountain air, the views can be exceptionally extensive and very, very spectacular. So, this is definitely a 'wake up early' morning to witness the dawn light striking the distant peaks of the Himalayan chain and watching them change colour. Who knows? You might even be able to make out Everest and perhaps even find yourselves above the clouds, akin to being on an island. It's only around 45 minutes back to Kathmandu. Enjoy a free afternoon and evening in Kathmandu and perhaps a spot of souvenir shopping.
