Unknown Mustang Overland tour to Lo Manthang

Mustang Jeep Tour to Lo Manthang

We have shown the itinerary on the basis of a complete holiday purely for illustrative purposes. Naturally as tailor-made Nepal holiday specialists we would be happy to discuss additional options, whether it be other activities, more/less sightseeing, alternative/upgraded accommodation etc dependent upon your interests, preferences and time available. We even tailor-make a suggested 'what to pack' list for you based upon your ultimately chosen Nepal tailor-made holiday too.

Day 1- Arrive Kathmandu

Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you'll be met and receive a private transfer for the short distance into central Kathmandu and to the "KGH" Hotel in the heart of the Thamel district. You'll be given a briefing on your forthcoming adventure, and in the evening can take dinner at your leisure in one of the many choices of cafes & restaurants in Kathmandu, although the open air courtyard cafe of the KGH Hotel is as good as anywhere. PLEASE NOTE: A special permit is required to enter Upper Mustang. In order for us to obtain permits for you, we have to present hard copies of your passport (scans are not accepted) by 1000hrs to the permit issuing office. The permit office is open Sunday-Thursday, Friday Mornings, closed all day Saturday. The permit office is also closed on Nepal Public Holiday days. Please anticipate that you may require extra days in Kathmandu as a result in order that we can obtain your permit.

Accommodation: KGH Hotel -   Kathmandu

Included Meals: None

Day 2 - Fly to Pokhara & Drive to Thasang

A private transfer to the airport for the early morning 25 min flight to Nepals premier resort-Pokhara. You can choose to spend a night here first if you wish, relaxing and enjoying the sub-tropical climate of laid back Pokhara. If not then your wild, overland journey begins and it's straightforward to start with. Boarding your Land Cruiser type 4WD vehicle, it's smooth tarmac as you head out of Pokhara and into the lower reaches of the Kali Gandaki Valley. Around Beni, you say goodbye to tarmac once and for all and the road becomes a dusty 4WD track that skirts the river. Reaching Tatopani the road now climbs and climbs and climbs as dust gives way to cobbles. First you get views of the Niligiri Himal and as you ascend further the mesmerising peak of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurnas come into view. Things then begin to level out finally as the Kali Gandaki Valley broadens out. A detour then winds its way quickly up to your overnight halt and the comfort of the spectacularly located Thasang Village Lodge. The lodge is perched high above the valley and looming immediately above you is Dhaulagiri in all its splendour, across the valley are the Nilgiri peaks and the Annapurnas. Altitude 1750m approx, Driving time approx. 5-6hrs

Accommodation: Thasang Comfort Lodge  -  Thasang (Naurikot/Larjung)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 - Drive to Kagbeni

Today everything changes! Back down to the valley floor and onto the stony jeep track, which now rises less acutely up towards Jomsom. Pretty soon the trees start to disappear and as you approach Jomsom virtually all vegetation disappears abruptly, marking the furthest extent of the Himalayan rain shadow. On your right the sharp peak of Nilgiri South is more spectacular than ever before and you have now crossed through the Himalayas. The arid landscape of the Mustang region is stretched out before you in the form of the upper reaches of the Kali Gandaki. Not only has the landscape changed, the culture has changed too and the villages from now on have a distinctly Tibetan flavour to them. An hour or so beyond Jomsom, your overnight halt tonight is in Kagbeni. Typical of villages in the Mustang region in terms of architecture, along with Tibetan buddhist monuments and symbols, Kagbeni is where Upper Mustang begins and to venture further special permits are required.

Altitude 2810m, Driving time approx. 3 hrs.

Accommodation: Annapurna Comfort Lodge -  Kagbeni

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 - Along the Kali Gandaki to Charang

Your journey into Upper Mustang begins properly today. After the permits are checked at the police post in Kagbeni, the jeep track today pretty much skirts the side of the Kali Gandaki River Valley. Whether there is any water in the river rather depends on what time of year you're undertaking the journey. Usually from October to mid-May the broad river floor looks more like a level boulder field. Take a walk onto the river bed and you may just hear water flowing underneath. You could also look for fossils too as evidence that this now high altitude region was once the sea bed of the Tethys Ocean. Along the way you can take a halt and explore the small village of Thangbe and see how their carefully tended terraced fields are irrigated in a landscape that is otherwise dry and barren wilderness. At Chusang there is a river tributary to cross and shortly thereafter the Kali Gandaki River bed itself. At certain times of year (particularly between June & October) it may not be possible for the vehicle you've been travelling in so far to make the crossing safely. There are footbridges, but nothing for the vehicle. Outwith the summer period it is usually a straightforward case of driving across a stony, flat and wide dried up river bed. When it is not possible to cross, then you will change to a locally chartered jeep/s. Regrettably "in the middle of nowhere", the local jeeps are not of the same standard or as comfortable as the 4WD vehicle you've been travelling in so far. After crossing the Kali Gandaki the jeep track now climbs away from the valley and there are a couple of high passes (approx 4000m) to cross before dropping down into Charang.

Altitude 3560m, Driving time approx. 5-6 hrs.

Accommodation: Lumbini Guest House,  Charang (private, ensuite room with proper beds)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 - Acclimatisation Day in Charang

Today is a necessary acclimatisation day. Charang itself is the second largest village (Lo Manthang the largest village) of the Upper Mustang area and is worthy of some on foot exploration. To give the legs a good stretch, you could take a hike up to the fascinating Ghar Gompa. Like many Buddhist monasteries, Ghar Gompa sits atop a hill and affords some good views of the Mustang region.

Accommodation:  Lumbini Guest House,  Charang (private, ensuite room with proper beds)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 - To Lo Manthang

Up and over over another mountain pass of around 4000m and then a slight descent and in around 2 hours you've arrived at the fabled city of Lo Manthang. It is somewhat small for a city. It is a large village really of less than 200 homes and around 875 people. If progress has been good, then you should have the entire afternoon to explore Lo Manthang. Altitude 3840m, Driving time approx. 2-3 hrs. You can of course add extra days here at Lo Manthang if you would like to explore the "city" further, or (for example) take a jeep excursion to visit the Chossar Sky Caves.

Accommodation: Mystic Himalayan Guest House, Lo Manthang (private, ensuite room with proper beds)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 - To Chusang

Theoretically it is possible to drive all the way back to Jomsom from Lo Manthang in one day. This would make it a very, very long day and we would suggest that from a perspective of comfort this is not desirable, and with driver fatigue in mind we don't think that's a good idea also. Of course the way back is the way in, but now the Himalayas form your far horizon, getting closer and closer as you progress. So, it's anything but repetitive in many respects.  Today we recommend travelling as far as Chusang (approx. 3100m). You should arrive here mid-afternoon and thus be able to give the legs a good stretch and take a hike to the fascinating and rather picturesque ancient village of Tetang. Driving time approx.5-6hrs.

Accommodation: Braga Guest House , Chusang  (private, ensuite room with proper beds)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8 - To Jomsom

Heading back along the side of the Kali Gandaki Valley the mighty Himalayan peaks get closer and closer. Nligiri South Peak becomes even more impressive and the bulk of Dhaualgiri comes into view and with luck you should be in Jomsom  (2700m) for lunch! Driving time approx. 3-4hrs.

Accommodation: Om's Guest House, Jomsom (private rooms with en suite and proper beds)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9 - Fly to Kathmandu (via Pokhara)

Taking the morning flight (all 18 minutes of it) to Pokhara. Effectively you're now in transit until the late afternoon flight to Kathmandu. Back in Kathmandu and a private transfer to your hotel. After your adventures in Upper Mustang, Kathmandu will no doubt feel bigger, noisier and livelier than ever before. If the thought of Kathmandu doesn't appeal, then our 'hindsight' suggestion would be to seriously consider spending a night in medieval Bhakatpur, or even the Shivapuri Hills instead. However, you may wish to consider some additional contingency for this trip, whether it be for any delays/cancellations that can and do occur for internal flights , or any difficulties that may arise on the trip, which are always possible on this very adventurous journey.

Accommodation: KGH Hotel, Kathmandu

Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 10 - Depart Nepal

A private transfer will take you to the airport for your return international flight.

Included Meals: Breakfast

Of course there's no reason to depart today, your Nepal holiday can be readily tailor-made.
